Gritty Realism Rule Set for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition
by DM Myriam for MilestoneRPG
Here are a couple of rule sets I’ve developed over my years as Dungeon Master for a grittier feel during games of D&D. By all means you are welcome to try them out and adapt to your own style of gaming. Remember that the idea is NOT to punish your players (the environment might be an unforgiving one, but you as a DM should be), but to create a level of difficulty that feels more realistic while still being fun. Talk to your players before implementing those rules. I would not recommend adding them to a table of new players, the game already has a lot on its own without adding more to it at the beginning. Some handouts refer to the Critical Hits Revisited by Benjamin Huffman which I have been using for years. You can find it here.
